Kaytranada has (probably) had a better 2016 that most of us.

Being the producer of the moment (credits this year include work with Katy B and Anderson .Paak) and remixing the likes of Rihanna has all been in addition to releasing his debut album 99.9% in May.

The album received critical acclaim, was the winner of the Polaris Music Prize and is also featured on many of 2016’s ‘best of’ album lists.

Last week the Canadian DJ released a remix of “Planet Rock”, originally made famous in 1982 by Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force. The track features beats made on the legendary Roland TR-808 and is noted as one of the pioneers of developing electronic and hip-hop music.

Kaytranada’s version – named the “Planet Invasion Remix” – retains the original iconic sounds of the drum machine, just giving it a 21st century update.

The new track coincides with the release of  “808”, a new documentary about the revolutionary drum machine. Narrated by Beats 1 DJ Zane Lowe, it features appearances from a host of musical icons, including  Rick Rubin and  Pharrell Williams.

Kaytranada’s version of “Planet Rock” has made the December playlist, free to stream now.

“808” can be watched exclusively on Apple Music.
